Editing Services, Pricing, and What to Expect
If you've ever tried to find a developmental editor and gotten lost in a maze of per-word rates, hourly estimates, and pricing calculators, you already know how confusing and impersonal that process can feel. At From Page One, it works differently. Here's what you need to know.
A Flat Rate, Assessed Per Project
From Page One prices every engagement as a flat rate — no per-word formulas, no hourly tracking, no surprise invoices. Pricing is assessed on a case-by-case basis following a consultation, and ranges between $500 and $3,500 depending on the scope and complexity of the project. That means you know exactly what you're investing before we begin, and the focus stays entirely on your manuscript rather than the clock.
The consultation is free. It exists to make sure we're the right fit for each other before any commitment is made. We offer a number of payment plans and options that are all interest-free and flexible enough to fit any budget.
Substantive Developmental Editing
This is the flagship service — a comprehensive editorial assessment of your full or partial manuscript. What you receive is a detailed editorial letter between 20 and 50 pages, built around your specific story. It covers overall structure, global plot, character arcs, subplots, thematic direction, worldbuilding, genre alignment, and marketability, supported by charts, tables, and specific examples drawn directly from your manuscript.
The philosophy behind every edit at From Page One is strengths-first. Before identifying what needs work, the editorial letter establishes what is already working — because the skills already present in your writing are the foundation for everything the revision builds toward.
Throughout the process, you have direct access for consultation by video, phone, or text. Questions, breakthroughs, plot tangles — all of it is part of the engagement.
The First Five Chapters
For authors who haven't worked with a developmental editor before, or who want a lower-commitment entry point, From Page One offers a focused editorial package covering the first five chapters of your manuscript. You'll receive a letter addressing your opening act, foundational worldbuilding, character first impressions, readability, and the marketability of your concept — everything a reader and a potential agent or publisher encounters first.
Additional Services
From Page One also supports authors beyond the manuscript itself. Additional services include outlining support for authors planning a revision or a new project, research assistance and comparative title recommendations, social media marketing strategy for TikTok, Instagram, and Substack, beta and ARC reader management, and query letter editing for authors pursuing traditional publishing or representation.
Turn-Around Time
The average project window for the first pass of developmental edit notes is 21 days from the Start Work Period. What you can expect after a free consultation is a proposal, a services contract, and a calendar of dates. Once we agree on a work period, the reading and analysis begins. We keep you in the loop throughout the whole process. Then after we send the first pass of notes, you have an unlimited amount of time to read, review, and schedule a call to have a detailed 1-2 hour conversation about your revision plan. We are with you through your revision and can turnaround comments on revised samples within a week. Real-time, accurate, detailed analytical feedback? AI could never.
Where to Start
Every client relationship at From Page One begins with a free consultation. It is a conversation, not a pitch — a chance to talk about your book, your goals, and whether this is the right partnership for where you are in your writing journey.
